Mundeswari Dham : Revisited

Mundeswari maa temple is situated in the kaimur district of bihar.It is situated on the Mundeshwari hill of kaimur range.


I visited this wonderful shirne in the year 2010 almost ten years back. The temple is lockted on the top of Parwara hill at the hight of 600 ft MSL.


This historical temple is a protected site of archaeological survey of India.An inscription dated 635 C.E was found here


This temple is dedicated to Shiva and Shakti.


Temple is built on octagonal lay-out red sand stone . perhaps block of stone carried out from chunar in U.P. There is a rare penta faced shivling inside middle of sanctum-sanctorum .

Architect of this temple is of Nagar style. This type of temple was made in ancient north india .


Earliest example of nagara style temple in Bihar


The bihar tourism department celebrate Mundeshwari Mahotsava on April 7 and 8 of each year to mark the importance of the ancient shrine.

There are doors and window on four side of the temple .


the door jambs are seen with carved images of DvarapalasGangaYamuna and many other murtis


Some broken idols and pillars outside temple.


The full size idol of goddess Mundeshwari,which is seen with ten hands holding symbols riding a buffalo, attributed to Mahishasuramardini, installed in the eastern sub chamber of the temple, has a great impact on devotees.

The temple attracts approximately  11 to 12 lakh devotees and tourists every year.
